I was just schooled
I spent my Saturday night in the company of a true teacher.
A 68 year old woman, mother, wife and now friend just educated me big-time.
I spend my days thinking about physical combat. Fighting...punches, attacks, strikes, etc. I preach over and over of the mental approach needed to secure victory! I talk passionately about fighting toward your goal of never being a victim! But what if you are one? What if you have been one? Where does the fight go then?
I was talking with this woman, Maureen, and for 2 hours I laughed at her jokes and had general conversations with her from Michael Jackson to hot dog stands in Chicago. We never once mentioned what I did for work, nor talked about any physical nature of combat or fighting...but I learned that this woman's middle name is fight!
During our conversation, she spoke about her passion for new adventure in her life! She spoke of her trials as a new stand-up comic in her 60's! She spoke of being on a TV series! She spoke of being a plain, hard working, good old fashioned bartender...and never once was Maureen's tone of voice anything less than up beat and positive. She was down right contagious to be around. I enjoyed the entirety of our conversations.
At one point in our conversation, we talked about dealing with "pain in the ass people" and life's stress. So, Maureen starts to tell me about her views on stress and life...and I listened.
She told me of how she lost her 22 year old daughter one year...
She told me how she lost her 33 year old son another year...
She told me how she came home to her house burnt to the ground...
AND NEVER ONCE WAS HER VOICE NEGATIVE!
This woman, told me of the most horrific, horrendous and painful events of her life....and she did it with hope for her future in her eyes shining as bright as the sun! Maureen has no idea what the word victim is.
"I won't dishonor my children by living my life as a negative person," Maureen told me...that is strength.
That was my lesson tonight. People do get hit and they get hit hard... Maureen was hit over and over again...and then she was hit again...BUT, she got her ass up! People like Maureen remind me to never lay down. As bad as the fight is, as hard as it is...as long as I keep getting up I will never be a victim. This is my creed.
I am proud to know a woman like this...this is the very root where Self-Defense begins. Personal Love and Hope.
I keep forgetting how amazing my life is and how amazing all those I meet daily are. You are all the reason for Izzo Training Systems and the reason I am passionate about self defense.
None of you are victims!
